The product

The KPN Portfolio Catalogue is a platform that will be used internally at KPN. In this platform members for teams among all departments can find true data about all of KPN’s business and consumer products. From product specifications and costs to whom is responsible manager for a specific group of products. Everything will be mastered on one platform.

The foundation

I joined the project when it was already ongoing for almost a year, without a designer involved. One of the things that stood out to me was that there was no clear overview of the structure and hierarchy. I state that you can’t build a great product on a weak foundation. So I took this as my main focus, while getting to know the platform and project and it’s users.

Homepage - Before

Homepage - After

A good example of improving the structure, but also the understandability of the catalogue, is the redesign of the homepage. In the previous design the homepage consisted out of eight cards. The problem with these cards are that they differ from functionality. Some cards link to a specific overview, such as: ‘History’ or ‘Reference lists’ and others are more like a feature. Such as; Create and change.
In the new design the focus is put on the destination a user wants to reach. As in most use-cases the user goal is already clear, before entering the platform.

Emphetise

One of the most valuable aspects of good design solutions is to understand an empathise with the user. During this project I tried to really involve the users and the stakeholders in the process of design. Not only by facilitating workshops and usability tests, but also by giving them a glimpse in the of a designer and the design process.
